Passing the ‘extended test’ is a government requirement, administered through the DSA (driving standards agency), for those who have had their full license revoked due to a serious infringement of the law.

The test is 1 hour in duration, the normal driving test being approximately 37 minutes. It can therefore cover a very broad variety of roads and traffic scenarios and the routes used are designed to challenge the attitude of the candidate’s temperament as well as their vehicle control.

Fortunately, it is a small minority that have to undergo this government remit and, although it was only introduced about 10 years ago, I have had to teach many to regain their full license.

It normally only takes a handful of lessons for them to reach the required standard because they were previously drivers, as opposed to learners, and as such mainly only need their bad habits rectified.
